Thin LED backlights come to the forefront of CCFL

Load thin light guides Thin LED Backlight is growing rapidly in the notebook panel market. DisplaySearch's latest quarterly LEDBacklight panel shipment and forecast report pointed out that the proportion of thin LED Backlight in notebook panels will increase from 16% in the fourth quarter of 2010 to 31% in 2010. The report also pointed out that the penetration rate of LEDBacklight in the notebook panel has expanded from 36% in the first quarter of 2009 to 81.5% in the first quarter of 2010. It is expected that the penetration rate will reach 97.7% by the end of this year; in other words, the traditional CCFLBacklight is in NotebookPC. The market will be close to a state of complete withdrawal.

DisplaySearch said that there are currently two structures in the LED Backlight part of the notebook panel: SlimType and Wedgetype; the difference is mainly in the technology and backlight structure of the LightGuidePlate. The SlimType LEDBacklight reduces the panel thickness to 3.0mm-3.6mm and the Wedgetype LEDBacklight has a Notebook panel thickness of 5.2mm-5.8mm. In addition, the quality and process level requirements of SlimType LEDBacklight are relatively high, and thinner materials and components such as LED strips, light guides, and the like are required.

"The supply of thin LED backlights has not been able to grow smoothly due to the yield of light guides," said AnitaHuang, a Display Analystbook and panel analyst. "And thin LED backlights have a premium of at least $5 compared to wedge-shaped LED backlights. In addition, for the notebook OEM, the panel with the thin LED backlight often encounters many panel structures that are too fragile.

She added, “However, despite the cost and assembly yield issues, panels with thin LED backlights will continue to grow rapidly; the main reason is that more and more Notebook brands are listing thin designs in the Notebook market. An important factor in product and market differentiation. At the same time, we have observed that the yield of thin LED light guides is improving rapidly, and the economic scale of thin LED backlights is expanding. We expect thin LED backlights and wedge LEDs. The cost and price gap of the backlight panel will gradually shrink.

Remarks: The data after Q2'10 is the predicted value.

"For the 10.1W, 11.6W, 13.3W and other sizes, the panel with the thin LED backlight panel is mainly used in the CULV (ConsumerUltraLowVoltage) model to advertise the power saving and thinning. Especially 13.3" W model, thin type It is more mainstream. AnitaHuang went on to say, "The advantage of thin LED backlights is that they are thinner and lighter for consumers to feel quickly. However, due to the fact that the sales of CULV models are not as expected, in order to make a clearer differentiation, brand manufacturers will make a comeback this year and launch a full range of thin NotebookPCs. At the same time, panel manufacturers are required to reduce the cost and price gap between thin LED backlight panels and wedge LED backlight panels. ”

DisplaySearchPC analyst HidetoshiHimuro said: "Another advantage of the thin LED backlight panel is that the connection between the backlight panel and the panel is shorter and the structure is simpler, so it is easier to prevent electromagnetic interference. The thin design of the thin LED backlight panel and the panel can also allow NotebookPC design engineers to have more space to design the network antenna module and related connection lines."

In addition, the quarterly LED Backlight panel shipment and forecast report also pointed out that in the first quarter of 2010, the penetration rate of LEDbacklight in the LCDMonitor panel reached 6.6%, and the penetration rate in LCDTV reached 9.3%.
