Among all the technologies being developed, it may be difficult to distinguish which technologies are truly practical. At present, there are two different processes for the practical manufacturing technology of OLED devices: one is to use high molecular organic polymers, and the other is to use low molecular organic polymers.
Polymer OLED (or PLED) devices can be manufactured using spin coating, photolithography, and final inkjet deposition techniques. Once inkjet deposition and plastic substrate technology are mature, PLED display devices can be arbitrarily customized to meet the needs of various sizes.
Low molecular polymer OLED (or SMOLED) devices can be manufactured using vacuum evaporation technology. Small organic molecules are packed in several layers on the ITO glass substrate. Compared with devices based on PLED technology, SMOLED not only has a lower manufacturing process cost, it can provide a display capability of all 262,000 colors, and has a long working life.
Unlike STN or TFT LCD, OLEDs are self-luminous devices, they emit light directly instead of blocking light. The characteristics of OLED self-luminescence make them have excellent viewing angle and display characteristics in dark environment. Since each pixel emits light by itself, the OLED will not have any contrast reduction light leakage phenomenon formed by the polarizer in the "dark spot" pixel area. The typical contrast ratio of OLED is greater than 1000: 1, and the viewing angle under this contrast ratio is close to ± 90 °. Since no backlight is required, a relatively thick backlight component is not needed, which makes the mechanical thickness of OLED thinner than that of LCD. In comparison, when measured from the angle of the vertical display plane, the typical contrast of a TFT LCD is about 500: 1. Since the LCD depends on the direction of the polarizer to affect the viewing angle, the contrast drops particularly fast when the viewing angle is away from the vertical angle. The viewing angle of the TFT LCD is defined when the contrast ratio exceeds 10: 1. This angle is usually from vertical to about 60 °.
