Select the Right Size Stern Thruster [2012-02-20]

Shakespeare Trolling Motor are some of the highest quality and effective types of mobility on the water today. What makes them so special is the fact that these battery powered devices are extremely quiet and easy to handle, allowing you to concentrate on fishing rather than battling with steering the boat. Of course, the overall weight of the boat is one of the factors we should consider; different boats need different types of power. Other things to consider include the length and the conditions that you will be fishing under. Taking all these things into account will help make sure you choose the right electric Stern Thruster.
1 Determine the weight of your boat. Check the owner's manual or go to the manufacturer's website and type in your specific model for estimated weight.
2 Calculate the average weight of personnel and gear you typically have on your boat when you are on the water. Now, divide that number by 70. This number is the amount of thrust, in lbs., of the proper size trolling motor. For instance, the average fishing boat, loaded, typically weighs in at 2,500 lbs. Divided by 70, you get 36. Thus, the proper size trolling motor for a 2,500-lb., average fishing boat provides 36 lbs. of thrust.
3 Deternine the length of the trolling motor's shaft required for your boat. Calculate the distance between your boat's bow to the waterline. Add 20 inches to that number and then round up to the next longest shaft if necessary. For instance, if the distance of your boat's bow to the waterline is 16 inches, you'll need a trolling motor with a shaft of 36 inches.
