Troubleshoot a Trolling Motor [2011-09-26]

In most instances, trolling motors are mounted on the bow or stern of a boat of other watercraft. They can be placed there permanently or mounted on brackets that allow users to quickly take them on and off. Some trolling motors have handles on them that users manipulate with their hands to turn the motor left or right, frontward or backward. Other trolling motors have special foot controls. Some of these devices are plugged into the trolling motor and others are wireless, but both varieties allow users to steer the motor using only their feet. By applying pressure to the left side of the foot control, for example, users can make the trolling motor itself turn to the left.It takes us many enjoy, but sometimes it always take much trouble, such as it become bad.
1.Check the charge level on the battery. Recharge it if necessary. Replace the battery if it will not hold a charge.
2.Check the wiring and connections on the battery cable. Wiring should not have any frays or kinks. Clean the connections with a stiff brush if they are corroded.
3.Power off the motor and check the propeller to make sure it is not fouled or damaged.
4.Check to make sure the shaft is not bent. A bent shaft can cause excessive noise or vibration when the motor is running.
5.Check the circuit breaker on your boat for a blown fuse if the motor will not power on. This is a symptom of a bigger electrical problem. Reset the breaker and replace the fuse after you've located the source of the problem.
6.Turn off the motor and rotate the propeller by hand to check the magnets. The propeller should rotate freely, with only slight resistance. If it won't turn at all, contact a service center.
